The Book of Enoch has been labeled “apocryphal,” which means “hidden away” or “secret book,” by the Roman Catholic Church; as “pseudepigraphal” (“falsely written,” written under false name) by Protestant churches.
The book contains a profound and unusual history of the origin of evil. Its author ascribes the corruption of the world to the fall of the “sons of heaven,” certain angels of God who follow a scheming one called Samyaza in his lust for the “daughters of men” and his desire to beget children by these women.
Samyaza, according to the story, fears to descend to the daughters of men alone, and so he persuades two hundred angels to accompany him. They bind themselves by “mutual execrations,” which are cursings. Then they descend and take wives from among the daughters of men. They teach the women sorcery, incantations, and divinations—twisted versions of the secrets of heaven.
The plot thickens when women conceive progeny from these angels: children of gigantic stature and evil character. They devour all the food that the men of earth can produce. Nothing satiates their hunger. They kill and eat birds, beasts, reptiles, and fish—and even men. One spiteful angel named Azazyel creates instruments of war and unnatural accouterments to beautify women, so that the world becomes “altered.”
The Book of Enoch attributes all the corruption of the earth to these fallen angels and their monstrous progeny.
But the story continues—for help is at hand. The men of earth cry out in their destruction, and heaven hears them.
The mighty archangels—Michael, Gabriel, Raphael, Suryal, and Uriel—come forth to witness the iniquity which has multiplied on the earth, and bring their testimony before the throne of the Most High, the King of kings.
The Lord then decrees the destruction of the evil ones on earth by a flood, although He plans for the escape of the son of Lamech, Noah.
God orders Raphael to bind Azazyel hand and foot.
Gabriel is sent to destroy the “children of fornication,” “the offspring of the Watchers” as these angels are called in the book, by inciting them to their own self-destruction in mutual slaughter.
Michael is then authorized to bind Samyaza and his wicked offspring “for seventy generations underneath the earth, even to the day of judgment.”
But how did evil return to the earth after the Flood?
The Book of Enoch provides the explanation that, although the Watchers' children, called “giants,” had been killed in the Flood, they returned as evil spirits to continue their destructive deeds upon earth. Of these, the author writes the following:
Now the giants, who have been born of spirit and of flesh, shall be called upon earth evil spirits, and on earth shall be their habitation. Evil spirits shall proceed from their flesh, because they were created from above; from the holy Watchers was their beginning and primary foundation.
Evil spirits shall they be upon earth, and the spirits of the wicked shall they be called. The habitation of the spirits of heaven shall be in heaven; but upon earth shall be the habitation of terrestrial spirits, who are born on earth.
The spirits of the giants shall be like clouds, which shall oppress, corrupt, fall, contend, and bruise upon earth. They shall cause lamentation. No food shall they eat; and they shall be thirsty; they shall be concealed, and shall rise up against the sons of men, and against women; for they come forth during the days of slaughter and destruction.
